Why Learn Music Theory
Music theory is the gateway to creative expression. I feel this is true. Some may think that music theory stifles creativity, but knowing music theory actually opens doors to creative expression. While one may think that some of our favorite guitar players may not understand music theory, particularly rock guitarists, after all much of rock music is about attitude and breaking the rules, a closer examination reveals that nothing can be further from the truth. Guitar icons such as Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, Randy Rhoads, Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Robert Fripp, Brian May, John Mayer, Prince, and the list goes on... are moderately to extremely literate when it comes to music theory. While writing a song doesn't require music theory knowledge, knowing chord construction, harmony, melody, rhythm, key signatures, time signatures, scales, and modes can only enhance one's ability to create.
Music is a language, as English is our spoken language, and the theory behind it is synonymous to grammar, and while one doesn't need to know grammar to be able to speak, knowing grammar helps one communicate clearly and effectively.
Learning music theory is beneficial for any guitarist who wants to truly excel in their craft. Many of our favorite guitar heroes were self-taught and may not be literate in music theory earlier on, however, over time, some acquire the understanding of music theory due to experience and learning, particularly from other musicians.
